「まがとき実験屋上」は、昭和100年であり戦後80年である2025年の夏に開始したプロジェクトです。全４話から成る映像作品で、東京芸術劇場クリエイター支援プロジェクト「TMTギア」のワークインプログレスとして進行しています。撮影場所はすべて池袋にある東京芸術劇場の敷地内です。
作者である音楽家の布施砂丘彦は、開国と先の大戦を経たあとの日本の歩みについて強い関心を持っており、作品という虚構を通して「日本とは何か」「日本における文化芸術とは何か」ということを問うています。
この国が開国したとき、それは未熟な国であると考えられていました。それまでの文化の多くが否定・再解釈され、「成熟」が試みられました。すなわち、この国は欧米の考えや装いを懸命に学び、経済的にも文化的にも大きく発展しました。一方でこの国の文化や街の歴史は、現代を生きるひとびとの日常との接続を失いつつあります。アイデンティティは揺らぎ始めました。世界情勢は不安定なものとなり、排他的な感情は街のなかにもインターネット空間のなかにも跋扈しています。
この国における「幽霊」とは、未練があって成仏ができない存在のことです。この物語には「未熟」な者たちの「幽霊」が登場します。彼らは「ぼくたちはどうやったら大人にな（れ）るのか 」という課題を解けずにいます。これは「先生」という存在から与えられ、自ら背負い込んだ課題です。果たしてこの問いに答えることができるのか、答える必要があるのか。この映像作品を通して、共に何かに思いを馳せることができれば嬉しく思います。

第１話のタイトル「マタイデ」には、「跨いで」「また出でる」「マタイ受難曲で」という意味があります。

“Magatoki Experimental Rooftop” is a project launched in the summer of 2025—a year marking both the 100th year of the Shōwa[昭和] era and the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
This four-part video work is being developed as a work-in-progress within TMT Gear, a creator support initiative of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. All footage was filmed on the premises of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

The creator of the work, musician FUSE Sakuhiko, has a long-standing interest in Japan’s historical trajectory following the country’s opening to the world and its experience of modern warfare. Through the fiction of this work, he poses fundamental questions: What is Japan? and What do culture and the arts mean in Japan today?

When Japan opened itself to the world, it was regarded as an “immature” nation. Much of its existing culture was denied or reinterpreted, and a process of “maturation” was pursued. By eagerly adopting Western ideas, appearances, and systems, the country achieved remarkable economic and cultural growth.
At the same time, however, the history embedded in Japan’s culture and cities has gradually lost its connection to the everyday lives of people living today. A sense of identity has begun to waver. As global conditions grow increasingly unstable, exclusionary sentiments proliferate both in physical urban spaces and across the internet.

In Japan, a “ghost” is understood as a being unable to move on due to lingering attachments. This story introduces the “ghosts” of those who remain “immature.” They are unable to resolve the question: How do we become adults?
This is a challenge imposed by the figure of the “teacher,” and one that they have also taken upon themselves. Can this question be answered at all—and must it be? Through this video work, the artist hopes viewers might reflect on these questions together.

The title of Episode 1, “Mataide[マタイデ]” carries multiple meanings in Japanese:
“to step over,” “to emerge again,” and a phonetic allusion to St. Matthew and St. Matthew Passion.
