Profile

Edgar Krapp

For many years Edgar Krapp has been one of Germany’s foremost organists of international renown. Born in Bamberg in 1947, he was trained by Franz Lehrndorfer in Munich and Maric-Claire Alain in Paris. Having won first prize at the Munich competition of the ARD radio and television network in 1971, he undertook concert tours of Europe, America and Japan, making his mark as an artist with an impressive blend of virtuosity, sense of style and musical individuality.
His numerous records as well as radio and TV productions, mainly involving important historical instruments, show that he is at home in a wide-ranging repertory extending from the pre-baroque era to the present, the main emphasis being on organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach. Well-known conductors such as Rafael Kubelik, Sir Colin Davis, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Horst Stein and Eliahu Inbal have engaged him to perform with their orchestras.
From 1974 to 1993 Edgar Krapp directed an organ class previously entrusted to Helmut Walcha at the Frankfurt College of Music. Between 1982 and 1991 he was also associated with the Salzburg Mozarteum as a visiting professor. Edgar Krapp took up a teaching assignment at the Munich College of Music in 1993-94.
In recognition of his artistic and educational services, he has been presented with the prestigious Frankfurt Music Award. He is a member of the governing body of the Neue Bachgesellschaft in Leipzig and of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
He played the first concert at the new Kern organ of the Kitara Hall in 1997.
