Michael Balke（Conductor）

From 2011 to 2016 the young German conductor Michael Balke was Principle Conductor at Magdeburg Opera where he has conducted a large repertoire of new productions such as ELEKTRA, DER ROSENKAVALIER, DON CARLO, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, LA CENERENTOLA, MARIA STUARDA, DIE TOTE STADT, CARMINA BURANA, LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS and Verdi’s REQUIEM as well as numerous symphony concerts.

Recent highlights include very successful new productions of TOSCA at the St. Gallen Theatre (Switzerland), a new Danish National Opera production of LA BOHEME in Copenhagen, MERRY WIDOW at the Metropolitan Theatre in Tokyo and DER FLIEGENDE HOLLANDER in Sweden.

Important engagements of the recent past include gala concerts with Ludovic Tezier at Opera national de Montpellier (France), with Ian Bostridge and the Orchestra Siciliana Palermo (Italy), and with Lawrence Brownlee and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra (Denmark). He led the new production of ROMEO ET JULIETTE (with the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali Milano) at the Teatro Grande in Brescia, as well as LA TRAVIATA at the Mannheim National Theatre (Achim Freyer production) and conducted HANSEL UND GRETEL at the Kassel State Theatre.

Maestro Balke regularly works with orchestras like Copenhagen Philharmonic, Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the Teatro La Fenice, Nancy Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. Michael Balke was born in Braunschweig, Germany and studied conducting under Christopher Zimmerman and piano under Frank Weinstock at the Cincinnati Conservatory (USA). Chamber music studies with the Tokyo String Quartet, LaSalle Quartet and Menahem Pressler.
