YAMADA Kazuki & Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Harmonic City Project MIZUNO Shuko: Symphonic Metamorphoses
In April 2026, conductor Kazuki Yamada will assume the position of Artistic Director (Music) at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre(TMT). As the first step of his tenure, we will present a complete performance of Shuko Mizuno's legendary masterwork Symphonic Metamorphosis. Yamada, who has long championed works by Japanese composers, has chosen as his inaugural program a piece of unparalleled scope and ambition—one that encompasses diverse elements from classical music, jazz, and ethnic traditions, and required approximately 700 performers at its premiere. Under the themes of "Near Future," "From Geigeki(TMT) to the World," and "Crossover," TMT's music program embarks on a new journey of creation and challenge alongside Yamada. We invite you to anticipate this grand spectacular of sound that heralds the dawn of a new era.

The revival of the largest symphonic work in history is finally happening!! Looking around the world, there are hardly any works on such a grand scale. And the astonishment that a Japanese composer created this and Japanese musicians achieved its performance. At some point, the value that "bigger is better!" began to shift, and the COVID pandemic accelerated this change—recently, large-scale projects have truly become rare. That's precisely why I want to return to the fundamental purpose of gathering people together. Public halls exist for the very purpose of bringing people together, and they carry the vital role of providing a space for the restoration of social connection and humanity. Now is the time to present a large-scale work and evoke the overwhelming excitement and energy that fills both the stage and the audience. And for that, there is no work more perfect than Symphonic Metamorphoses. As I assume the position of Artistic Director of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, I want to make this Symphonic Metamorphoses performance the first installment of our "Harmonic City Project." Stay tuned!!
