Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre (TMT) organize “Artistic Directors International Online Meeting” as a special edition of TMT Autumn Selection of Tokyo Festival.
Tokyo Festival have decided to hold the festival this year, in the belief that an international performing arts festival is needed to prevent Tokyo from closing its diverse circuits.
Therefore, as a part of the festival, TMT specially invite world leading artists and directors with whom TMT planned to work together this year or with whom TMT have a strong bond, to get together online and hold hot discussion. Hideki Noda, the artistic director of TMT will join as the host panelist. With such a gorgeous gathering which would not have been realized if it is not for this situation, will extend the exciting talk.
2 sessions of online discussion will be held, with ZOOM, and the recording will be streamed for about 2 weeks. Distributed for free.(language English / Japanese)

The world’s leading directors discuss how the theatre of our times will survive this situation. Throughout history, theatre has experienced similarly difficult moments: plague, shutdowns, lockdowns. In the times of Shakespeare, for example.
Can such disasters redefine it or not?

SESSION 2; “The present and the future of Art Festivals.”

The modern festival culture started after WWII, in a ruined world, when festivals became platforms of joy. What can we learn from this crisis and how could art festivals fulfill this mission again now? What is the role of international art festivals now?

Profile

Didier Deschamps

Born in Lyon, he took to modern dance at a very young age. With an unusual background, he first developed as a modern dancer and later embraced classical dance. In Lyon, he worked with Régine Chopinot, Mathilde Monnier among others. In 1981 he joined the CNDC of Angers (then headed by Viola Farber) as a performer, and then as assistant in teaching supervision. In 1985, he was appointed head of studies at the dance department of the Lyon conservatory.
Concurrently, he continued to tour creations with his own company around France and Europe. In 1990, the Ministry of Culture commissioned him to join the dance administration where he assumed various positions. In 2000, he returned to hands-on activities, serving as director of the CCN of Nancy-Ballet Lorraine through June 2011, at which date he was appointed director of Théâtre de Chaillot. As the national theatre specialized for dance, Chaillot introduced diversity of dance performances from all over the world, including Saburo Teshigawara and others from Japan. He also introduces unique physical theatres, and Hideki Noda’s “THE BEE” “EGG” “In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom.” Had been shown. Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur,Officier de l’ordre national du Mérite, Commandeur des arts et des lettres.

Thomas Ostermeier

Thomas Ostermeier (born 1968 in Soltau), studied directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst »Ernst Busch«, Berlin from 1992-96. From 1996-99 he was the Artistic Director of the Baracke at the Deutsches Theater, Berlin. Since 1999 resident director and member of the Artistic Direction of the Schaubühne.
Ostermeier directed more than 50 plays and teaches directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst »Ernst Busch«. His productions are touring worldwide. As a director he worked at Burgtheater Wien, Kammerspiele München, Hamburger Schauspielhaus, Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne and at the Comédie-Française in Paris.
In November 2004 he has been appointed »artiste associé« for the Festival d’Avignon, in 2009 »Officier des Arts et des Lettres« and was promoted to the degree of »Commandeur« in 2015. 2010-2018 Ostermeier was the German president of the German-French Council of Culture. For his contributions to the European theatre, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Kent in 2016. Among many other awards Thomas Ostermeier received the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale for the entirety of his work in 2011.

Ivo van Hove

Ivo van Hove is General Director of Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (former Toneelgroep Amsterdam) since 2001. He was artistic director of the Holland Festival from 1998 to 2004. His productions tour all over the world: the Edinburgh Festival, Taipeh, The Barbican London, the Ruhrtriennale, Vienna Festival, Seoul, Sydney, Buenos Aires, New York and Festival d’Avignon.
Works Van Hove has directed include Angels in America, a staged version of Yanagihara’s A Little Life, Shakespeare’s Roman tragedies and Kings of War, Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage and Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. Other selected international credits include A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic, Network and Hedda Gabler at the National Theatre, Visconti’s Obsession at the Barbican, and productions for Schaubühne Berlin, Paris’s Théâtre de l’Odéon and Comédie-Française and in New York he directed A streetcar named desire and Hedda Gabler at NYTW, A View from the Bridge, The Crucible, Network and West Side Story on Broadway. With David Bowie and Enda Walsh he created Lazarus, which he also directed in London and Amsterdam.

Opera credits include The Makropulos Case, Salome for Dutch National Opera, Boris Godunov and Don Giovanni for Paris Opéra, world premiere Brokeback Mountain for Teatro Real Madrid, Macbeth for Opéra de Lyon, La clemenza di Tito and Idomeneo for La Monnaie, Brussels, Mazepa for Komische Oper Berlin and Mahagonny in Festival Aix en Provence.

Van Hove has received many international accolades including two Tony Awards, two Obies and two Olivier Awards and many awards in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. He is a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, received the Flemish Culture Prize for Overall Cultural Merit (2015) and has been made a Commander of the Order of the Crown by King Filip of Belgium. In 2019 he was awarded the Dutch state art prize; the Johannes Vermeer prize.

Constantin Chiriac

A theatre and film actor and a cultural leader, Constantin Chiriac studied Acting in Bucharest.
He is the President of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, the General Manager of the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre in Sibiu, and the President of the Sibiu Performing Arts Market. He played a decisive role in obtaining the title of Sibiu – European Capital of Culture 2007 and in the project’s undeniable success.
He is a professor at the University of Sibiu Countless awards and distinctions, including the 2014 Aspen Institute Award for Contribution to Romanian Cultural Patrimony and the Prize granted by the Japan Foundation and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2015). He is an Officer of the Order of the Belgian Crown (2011) and an Honorary Tourism Ambassador since 2014. Besides, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Merit (2000) and an Officer of the Order of Cultural Merit from the Grand Duke of Luxembourg (2017). In 2018, he was awared The Royal Decoration of the Cross of the Romanian Royal House, the Honorary Citizenship of Sibiu and the Honorary Citizenship of Râmnicu Vâlcea. In 2019, he became honorary member of the Academy of Romanian, the French Minister of Culture, the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (France) and also received “The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays” from the Japanese Government. In 2020 : Knight of the Legion of Honor, by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in France. the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by The Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, The Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts from Chișinău and The National University of Arts George Enescu Iași.
Constantin Chiriac has played in more than 40 performances, collaborating with important directors, such as Iulian Vișa, Andriy Zholdak, Mihai Măniuțiu, Silviu Purcărete and Kushida Kazuyoshi;

Yi-Ruu LIU

Since its opening in 1987, the NTCH has been providing performances that are rich in content and creativity. For the past 31 years, the NTCH proactively commissioned new works from domestic artists, such as the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, U-Theatre, XinXin Nanguan Ensemble, Shakespeare’s Wild Sisters Group, Huang Yi Studio +. Meanwhile, the NTCH also promoted international cooperation and co-production with oversea artists, including The Great Tamer by Dimitris Papaioannou; King Lear by Olivier Py; The Fountainhead by Ivo van Hove; YogeeTi by Mourad Merzouki and Compagnie Käfig, and other artists such as Robert Wilson and Suzuki Tadashi.
Yi-Ruu is the Executive and Artistic Director of the National Theater and Concert Hall,Taipei. She used to work as director’s secretary and deputy artistic director of the NTCH, supporting to establish the NTCH as Taiwan’s first ever administrative corporation, while helping it to conform with the international trend and promoting Taiwan through arts.
She was working with several performing arts groups and educational institutions in Taiwan, including Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Ju Percussion Group Foundation, Taiwan Art Administration and Management Society (TAAMS), and Taipei National University of the Arts. Yi-Ruu has also spent many years in the public relations and media fields, and is one of the few artistic managers who have comprehensive experience in enterprise, government, and academia.

Hideki Noda

In 1955, Hideki Noda was born in Nagasaki, Japan. Noda is a playwright, director and actor. Noda launched his first theatre company, Yume no Yuminsha and creating many works to much acclaim. After disbanding the company in 1992, he went to study in London. In 1993, he established a theatre production company called Noda Map. Since then, presented a succession of major hits, including Kill, Pandora no kane (Pandora’s Bell), Oil, Akaoni (Red Demon), The Bee, One Green Bottle, The Character, egg, In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom , and Q. He has collaborated with the Kabuki actor Nakamura Kanzaburo XVIII, and he has adapted Kabuki plays and directed productions such as Tragedy of Togitatsu, and Nezumikozo, his original versions of the classical Kabuki piece at Kabuki Theatre. Noda is also actively involved in international productions, working with Thai, Korean and British actors. He became the artistic director of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre as of July 2009. He has won most of the major drama awards in Japan, and was awarded the 2009 Asahi Prize. He was appointed an Honorary Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in October 2009 and the Medal with Purple Ribbon (for contributions to education and culture) in June 2011.

Octavian Saiu

Saiu is a scholar and professional theatre critic. He holds a PhD from National University of Theatre and Film (NUTF) in Romania, and another one from the University of Otago in New Zealand. He has been awarded his Habilitation in Theatre and Performing Arts. He teaches at NUTF, Sibiu University and the University of Bucharest. He was Visiting Fellow at the University of London, and Visiting Professor at various universities in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, as well as the Grotowski Institute. He has been actively involved, as Conference Chair and Invited Speaker, in major academic and theatre events including the Theatre Olympics, Wuzhen Theatre Festival, as well as Edinburgh International Festival, where he was Chair of the Samuel Beckett Conference in 2013. Since 2004 he has been the Chair of the Conferences of Sibiu International Theatre Festival. He is the Chair of the Shakespeare Studies Conference Series, organized by Craiova Shakespeare festival in partnership with the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC). He is Adjunct Secretary General of IATC and President of the Romanian Section – Theatre Studies of IATC. He has published eleven books on theatre. He received the Critics’ Award in 2010, the Award of the Union of Theatre Artists (UNITER) in 2013, and the Order of Cultural Merit from the President of Romania in 2020.
