A unique collaboration between the Kyoto sculptor Kohei Nawa and remarkable choreographer Damien Jalet

The first collaboration between Kohei Nawa and Damien Jalet was Vessel, which premiered in 2016 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto, creating a portrait of two worlds from the Kojiki, the oldest Japanese book: Yomi (the underworld of the dead) and Takamagahara (the Plain of High Heavens where the gods dwell). Planet[wanderer] takes place in the world in between those two: Ashihara no Nakatsukuni, the Central Land of the Reeds—the world we inhabit. The human being is but a reed, the feeblest one in nature and the performance captures that oscillation in a fragile balance between power and vulnerability, harmony and survival, evolution and destruction. The subtitle gestures toward the Greek etymological root of “planet” as meaning a wanderer. Planet[wanderer] conjures up a unique world onstage as imagined by a Japanese sculptor and European choreographer: a liminal place between the living and the dead, showcasing the constituent elements of the human body and the cosmos as well as their inseparable relationship with gravity.

Damien Jalet

Damien Jalet is a choreographer and dancer whose work spans a wide range of fields—not only dance, but also visual art, music, film, theater, and fashion. His collaborations with Kohei Nawa include “VESSEL” (2016), the filmwork Mist (2021), and “Planet[wanderer]” (premiered in 2021). In November 2023, he collaborated with artist JR and composer Thomas Bangalter to create “Chiroptera”, a work in which 154 dancers, including principal dancer Amandine Albisson, danced on the facade scaffolding of the Paris Opera House. In September 2024, he collaborated again with Kohei Nawa to present “Mirage [transitory]” at the THEATER 010 in Fukuoka, featuring a musical composition by Thomas Bangalter, and constituting a preliminary piece to a creation deployed for a large stage and 16 performers of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève (premiere in Geneva in May 2025). In film, He choreographed for Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria” (2018), Paul Thomas Anderson’s “ANIMA” (2019), and Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” (2024). In 2022, he was awarded the Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France (The Order of Arts and Letters).

NAWA Kohei

Kohei Nawa is a sculptor born in 1975 in Osaka. Based in Kyoto, he completed his doctorate in sculpture at the Graduate School of Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts in 2003. He currently serves as a professor at Kyoto University of Arts. In 2011, he presented Kohei Nawa ‒ SYNTHESIS, a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. In 2017, he participated in the exhibition Japanorama at the Centre Pompidou-Metz. From July 2018 to February 2019, his sculpture “Throne” was displayed under the Louvre Museum’s pyramid as one of the official works of Japonismes 2018, a joint project between Japan and France. In 2023, his 25-meter-tall outdoor sculpture “Ether (Equality)” was permanently installed on Île Seguin, an island in the Seine River in France.
