Xavier Bobés is an artist who uses a method called “documentary object theater.” In this work that delves into the history of late 20th century Spain, small, modest, and easily forgettable objects of daily life—keychains, old family photos, postcards, coins, vintage magazines—narrate their stories as “survivors” of the past. Like a magician, the work presents a huge collection of tiny objects as a captivating story unfolds, flooding our minds with mundane quotidian details and representing the deep emotions that they evoke, as well as the changes that occur across a sweeping era.
Each show has a limited capacity of five audience members. Sitting at a small table in an intimate, salon-like space, they witness an intense series of events that zoom in on sensory experiences and trigger old memories while creating new ones. As if casting a spell, Xavier Bobés manipulates both the past and future.
