King Lear

Schedule
2026.9.21 Mon - 2026.10.4 Sun
Venue

This is a new lineup of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre under the new Artistic director of the Performing Arts Division. He is planning a series of works that re-examine classic productions for the present day, and which welcome in energetic directors and talented cast members!

Beginning in FY2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre will welcome OKADA Toshiki as the new artistic director (Performing Arts Division) and develop a diverse lineup of performances. As part of this, we will continue to work on thoroughly questioning classic works in the modern era. In FY2026, we will perform “NORA,” a performance that depicts Ibsen’s masterpiece “The Doll’s House” within a modern smartphone-centered life, and the Shakespearean masterpiece tragedy “King Lear”, a play that is increasingly garnering attention in our aging society.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre is handling the classics under the concept of making them function as thoroughly vivid modern questions.
Directed by MORI Shintaro and featuring UCHINO Seiyo in a starring role, they have created a burning "King Lear" who seems to confront us with questions that still remain even at the end of a hopeless situation.

Lear, a monarch with absolute power who has reigned over his kingdom for many years, tests the affection of his daughters in order for them to inherit his throne and territory. Cordelia, his youngest daughter, gives candid advice to the king and scolds her two older sisters for speaking sweet words to the king. Furious at the petulance of his beloved youngest daughter, Lear disinherits Cordelia and splits his territory between his other two daughters. However, neither of the two daughters he is relying on welcome Lear's presence. Treated cruelly by his two daughters, Lear runs away, and accompanied by a fool, he drifts into madness in the wilderness. Meanwhile, Edgar, the eldest legitimate son of the Gloucester family, falls into the trap of Edmund, an illegitimate son of the same family, and takes flight. Edmund has his eye on the power of the throne, and he ensnares Lear's two eldest daughters in his manipulations. Lear falls further and further into madness amid his miserable circumstances, while Gloucester is betrayed by Edmund and has his eyes gouged out. Cordelia, who married the King of France, becomes reconciled with Lear and she challenges her two sisters to a fight. As the two older sisters become increasingly more opposed to each other over their mutual love for Edmund and over each other's territory, this blood-soaked conflict eventually ends in tragedy.
