Beginning in FY2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre will welcome OKADA Toshiki as the new Artistic director of the Performing Arts Division, and develop a diverse lineup of performances. As part of this, we will continue to work on thoroughly questioning classic works in the modern era. In FY2026, we will perform “NORA,” a performance that depicts Ibsen’s masterpiece “The Doll’s House” within a modern smartphone-centered life, and the Shakespearean masterpiece tragedy “King Lear” that is increasingly garnering attention in our aging society.
The “classics” of modern drama tell the tales of people who live in the present.
Timofei Kulyabin’s production of the “The Doll’s House.” He is a director who is active at theatre festivals in European countries.

Today, the screen of our smartphones reflects our minds, hearts, and souls more than anything else. In this modernization of a classic of modern theatre, Ibsen's "The Doll's House," Timofei Kulyabin's production idea is both vivid and completely believable as he presents the story by making full use of the technique of letting the audience peek at the smartphones of the characters and see their interactions on the screen. He uses a classic as something for all of us who live in today's modern world. "NORA," is one of the best examples of this, and it will provoke everyone.
