OKADA Toshiki’s first theatre play as Artistic Director of the Performing Arts Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre
OKADA Toshiki, new appointee as the Artistic Director of the Performing Arts Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre (from April 2026), will perform his first work “a play by zombies that want to make a movie” at Theatre East from Friday, August 7 to Sunday, August 23. OKADA continues to challenge the concept of theatre, and his capabilities are attracting attention from around the world. Alongside his ambition, the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre is taking on the challenge of updating the relationship between the theatre and the real world. OKADA’s latest work “Sliding Away”, which will premiere in May as a repertory work of the Hanover State Theater in Germany, is a new creation made with the performers and staff of the Japanese version.
The scene is the set of a zombie film where five zombies appear. They want to make a movie for zombies, a movie by zombies for zombies, and they ask us, the human audience, a number of questions. This is the asymmetry between zombies and humans. Who decides what is normal and what is human? What if the problem is not with zombies, but with us humans? Please pay close attention to their attempts which are full of absurd and clever questions.

I feel that theatre is still full of so much latent potential in terms of doing more than what existing theatres have already done. I have always had a dream of trying to draw this out even if its just a little bit. I want to create a new and tricky relationship between a theatre drawing out a new angle, the people in the audience, and between the theatre and reality, so I made a zombie theatre production that questions society.
