Sound performances by a sound engineer and artists of all genres erupt simultaneously. Spend two days finding a balance within the shifting layers of the venue.

First held at Shibuya WWW in 2024, YOU BALANCE is an event directed by sound engineer Toshihiko Kasai, whose work includes both recording sessions and live acoustics. The lineup offers a total of approximately 20 artists, spanning an array of styles—from hikigatari (singing to one’s own accompaniment) and traditional Japanese instruments to stand-up comedy. The audience is free to come and go as they please: with multiple performances taking place simultaneously in different locations, it is impossible to experience every single offering. Filled with everchanging and overlapping sounds and atmospheres, this is a time for each audience member to explore their own sense of flow and balance, to discover and savor their own special moments. The custom sound system creates completely different soundscapes for the upper and lower atrium areas, and open studios reveal glimpses of the musicians’ creative process. An endless array of sonic gradients awaits you at this event.

I want to experience a new sensation.

In an attempt to stir up the senses, I try to mix things that seem antithetical and incongruent: the organic and inorganic, noise and music, parallel chronologies, performer, audience, staff, and so on. While demarcating boundaries between things makes it much easier to efficiently go about our days, drawing these lines can also stop us from thinking deeply and freely. I try to keep using my mind at every moment, even if it feels tedious.

To always listen to your gut feeling. To stop prioritizing conceptual understanding, and just enter the environment in front of you. To draw out your distinct sensory awareness.

Striking a balance on your own.
